Quarter Four

April to June 2019

We delivered a successful WorldSkills Global Skills Challenge (GSC) in Melbourne this quarter. The culmination of a yearlong journey for competitors, WorldSkills Experts, their family and friends, the GSC also informed the selection of the 2019 Skillaroos team. The Skillaroos is the team we send to the international competition, which in 2019 will be held in Kazan, Russia. We continued to collaborate with partners, support and grow the WorldSkills community, and prepare for the international championships in Kazan in August.

WorldSkills Australia
Global Skills Challenge

Hosted in Melbourne from April 8 to 16, this international event simulated a 4-day WorldSkills International Competition. More than 500 competitors and officials from 16 countries participated in 24 skills competitions that took place across five different Victorian TAFE campuses. Senator The Hon Michaelia Cash was ‘’so excited to be at WorldSkills Australia Global Skills Challenge Farewell Function, watching our Australian Skillaroos team announcement’’.

Regional Activity &
Trade Events

Mechatronics and Welding competitions ran simultaneously across three days at National Manufacturing week each facilitating three one-day competitions in Melbourne. It was an exciting first for WSA and was made possible through support from the Victorian Government. The competitor’s competition projects were judged by industry experts providing an insightful exploration into their skill level in front of over 20,000 people.

Hair Expo Australia delivers access to over 56,000 hair professionals, and we ran a WorldSkills Australia Hairdressing Challenge Live on stage! We invited a group of hairdressing apprentices to the main stage to demonstrate their skills and compete against their peers. The challenge involved two stages, the first includes designing and creating a catwalk hair design. The second section included a traditional male haircut, beard design and blow-dry!

Team Australia to Compete
in Kazan

Following the GSC, a final team selection of 15 young Australians and 23 International Experts, representing 15 skills were selected to represent Australia as Skillaroos at the 45th WorldSkills International Championships in Kazan, Russia in August 2019.
